Two-time Grammy Award winner Kathy Mattea has spent more than four decades proving that great country music is about more than a hit record—it’s about telling stories that stay with you.
Born in West Virginia and raised on the sounds of country, bluegrass and folk music, Mattea moved to Nashville as a teenager and began her recording career in the early 1980s. She soon became one of country music’s most distinctive voices, blending traditional country with Appalachian, folk and roots influences.
Her breakthrough came with songs like “Love at the Five and Dime,” “Goin’ Gone,” “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” and “Where’ve You Been.” That last song earned Mattea a Grammy Award for Female Country Vocal Performance in 1991. She would win another Grammy in 1994 for her gospel album Good News. In all, Mattea has earned eight Grammy nominations and two wins.
Her career has also included collaborations with artists including Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Suzy Bogguss and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
